Obituary for Harry "Pete" Eugene Atwell

Harry Eugene “Pete” Atwell, 85, of Cloverport, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
Pete was born January 15, 1933 to the late Van Buren and Jane Weatherholt Atwell in Cloverport, KY. He lived most of his life in Cloverport, but left for a short period and after returning, he drove back and forth to Louisville for 13 years. He also was an entrepreneur, building houses doing plumbing and carpenter work. He and his wife Emogene operated Rhnea’s Restaurant, Pates Restaurant, the Tastee Freeze and Carter’s Bus Station Restaurant. He opened each of these and fixed them up and greeted the people while Emogene cooked. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and after raising the vegetables he loved giving them away. Along with all of this he loved his roses and being a great story teller, he would entertain everyone with his tales. He was very proud of his service to his country and served in the Army during the Korean War. He kept his uniform and even in later years he was still able to fit into his uniform, wearing it in parades and other civic functions. He was a member of local 181 for 50 years and was especially honored to have received a 50-year pin from them. After retiring he would sit on his porch and entertain people with his stories. He was also a member of the Honor Guard and liked shining his and his army buddies’ boots. He also had a farm where he would raise tobacco.
Besides his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Emogene Stillwell Atwell; daughter, Angela Lynn Atwell; brothers, John, Van, Dan and Freddie Atwell; sisters, Lorena Hamilton, Ethel Woods and grandson, Josh Yeckering.
Leaving behind to mourn his passing, but celebrating the full life that he lived, are his sons, Barry (Penny) Atwell, Lewisport, Roger Atwell, Cloverport, Robert (Jennifer) Atwell, Owensboro; daughter, Rhnea (John) Hill, Evansville; sister, Lena “Cookie” Stevens of Lewisport; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
A celebration of Pete’s life will be held 4:00 pm, Wednesday, December 12 at Cloverport Funeral Home with Bro. Wallace Gooch officiating. The family will receive friends and family Wednesday at the funeral home from 10:00 am until service time.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Lisa Atwell, Doug Wallace, Steve Miller, Ella Davis, The Heartland Villa in Lewisport, and the 2nd floor nursing staff at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
